The day will start with a SCENIC DRIVE between the TWO MAJESTIC VOLCANOES that make up the bulk of Hawaii Island, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.
Look for SURFACE OUTBREAKS and OCEAN ENTRIES while the black, SMOKING landscape changes right before your eyes as the sun sets.
From dramatic black lava flows and lush native rainforests to the breathtaking sight of the volcano at night, you’ll experience everything that Hawaii Island’s volcanoes have to offer. This popular combination tour is an amazing way to see both personalities of the volcano in one day. Join our Park Ranger-trained guides and make the spectacular Hawaii Volcanoes National Park your daylight destination.
The day will start with a scenic drive between the two majestic volcanoes that make up the bulk of Hawaii Island, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Make a brief stop at the Adventure Store in Hilo to pick up provisions and try out our climbing wall before continuing to the National Park, let your guide share the unique wonders of the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hawaii. Enjoy several interpretive walks in the Park including visits to active volcanic craters and steam vents, a walk through the famous Thurston Lava Tube, and a visit to the fascinating Jaggar Museum. The rich history of the Park makes for a fascinating narrative as only our guides can tell it. Picnic-style lunch provided.
Leaving the Park behind, we’ll take you on an evening discovery of Kilauea Volcano. We will continue on to the Puna District on the East-side of the Big Island, home to the best lava viewing locations. Your guide will prepare a Hawaiian-style barbecue dinner at our private macadamia nut and honey farm complete with choice of complimentary beverage including sodas, juice and bottled water. Our exploration continues to the heart of the volcano with a scenic drive along the geo-thermally charged Puna Coast to Kalapana where we will take a walk across the lava to visit the former site of the most beautiful black sand beach in the world, Kaimu, entombed since 1990 under 75 feet of lava.
Entering the lava viewing area, we will drive as close as we safely can before setting off on foot. Look for surface outbreaks and ocean entries while the black, smoking landscape changes right before your eyes as the sun sets. Skylights in the lava tube system and surface flows suddenly glow bright red as the crackle and hiss of escaping gasses and liquid rock changing to solid seems to grow louder as the lava slowly marches to the sea. New land is being created and added to the Big Island right before your eyes, just as these islands have been created for millions of years! The return drive to Kona is along the Hamakua Coast under the cover of darkness.
